Tallow makes a lot of sense as the base of a mineral sunscreen because it is deeply nourishing, skin-compatible, and protective without feeling greasy.
Unlike many natural sunscreens made with heavier plant oils like coconut oil, a tallow-based formula can feel more balanced on the skin. It supports the skin barrier, sits well on the skin for hours in sun, wind, saltwater, or dry conditions, and does not leave the same greasy layer that many people dislike.

Great product. Only thing to perhaps work on, is the absorption. It leaves quite a white surface, hard to wash of even from the hands. On the other hand sunstick is better in that sense.

A quick bit of context on the 'leaves a surface' part: This is a mineral filter, and mineral filters work by sitting on top of the skin as a physical layer that reflects UV — they're not designed to absorb in. That's true of every mineral sunscreen on the market, ours included. If a product disappears completely, it's almost always because it's using nano-particles or chemical filters instead of the kind of non-nano minerals we use.
That said — this one (the balm) is actually formulated with less percentage of minerals than the Sunstick, not more. So what you're describing sounds like an application thing rather than the formula itself: most likely a touch too much balm going on, or too thin a layer when you use the Sunstick by comparison. Try a lighter layer of the balm, pressed in rather than rubbed, and you should see noticeably less residue.
